Calorie Intake Calculator (Simple)

No height, no age, no formulas to compare — just your weight and the kind of work you do, multiplied by the energy requirement per kilogram that India's ICMR-NIN publishes for Indian adults.

ICMR-NIN 2020 · kcal per kg + kcal

ICMR-NIN worked these per-kg figures out for its reference adults (65 kg men, 55 kg women). If you weigh much more than that because of extra body fat, multiplying by your current weight overestimates your needs — the TDEE Calculator takes height and age into account.

How this is calculated

Daily calories = body weight × ICMR-NIN 2020's energy requirement per kg per day (Table 1b): men 32, 42 or 53 kcal/kg and women 30, 39 or 49 kcal/kg for sedentary, moderate or heavy work. ICMR-NIN adds 350 kcal a day in pregnancy, and 600 (baby 0–6 months) or 520 (7–12 months) while breastfeeding (Table 1a).

Why use the ICMR-NIN figures?

ICMR-NIN's 2020 requirements were set specifically for Indians. Its expert group found that international equations overestimate the resting metabolism of Indian adults, and that everyday activities burn less energy for Indians than the Western studies assumed, so its figures are lower than international formulas give.

When this simple method isn't enough

The per-kg figures were worked out for ICMR-NIN's reference adults (65 kg men, 55 kg women). If you weigh a lot more because of body fat, are very tall or short, or want to lose weight, a method that uses height and age will be closer — try the TDEE Calculator, or see all three methods together in the Calorie Calculator.
