Diet Habits That Are Silently Affecting Your Thyroid

A few everyday habits that seem harmless — or even healthy — can quietly interfere with thyroid function or medication absorption, especially for anyone on levothyroxine.

Taking thyroid medication with tea, coffee, or too close to a high-fibre breakfast is one of the most common issues. Even a 30-minute gap can meaningfully change how well the medication is absorbed. Excess raw cruciferous vegetables — cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli — in very large quantities can also affect iodine uptake for some people, though cooking largely resolves this.

Irregular meal timing and skipping meals can affect metabolism over time, which matters more for someone already managing a thyroid condition. Consistency in meal timing tends to matter as much as what's actually being eaten.

None of this means avoiding these foods altogether — it usually just means adjusting timing, which is a much easier fix than an entirely new diet.
